Entering their first season back as members of the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League (ACCHL), Elon Hockey is gearing up for a strong schedule. The regular season will include 23 games, including two tournaments in back to back weekends.
The puck drops on the season on September 15th when the Phoenix travel to Charlotte to take on defending ACCHL Tournament champs, the UNC-Charlotte 49ers. Elon and Charlotte split the season series last year, with both teams winning on the road. The following weekend, Elon and Duke will write the latest chapter in what has become a terrific rivalry.
To close out the month of September, Elon will compete in the Jim Sapikowski Memorial Tournament September 28-30, hosted by UNC-Chapel Hill. Elon’s three out-of-league opponents will be East Carolina University, Southern Methodist University and Christopher Newport University. The Phoenix will look to come out as champions for the third consecutive year.
The following weekend, all ACCHL teams will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina for the league’s Stephen Russell Memorial Tournament, which is the nation’s 2nd largest college hockey tournament. Elon’s three opponents for that weekend will be James Madison University, Virginia Tech and George Washington University. To close out the busy three-week stretch, Elon will travel to Charleston, SC during Elon’s fall break to face the College of Charleston on October 12 and 13. The trip has been an annual tradition for the Phoenix, and is always one of the highlights of the season.
After a week off, Elon will welcome the Seahawks from UNC-Wilmington for two games. The Seahawks, new to the ACCHL this season, have become consistent rival for the Phoenix. UNC-W topped Elon in front of a raucous home crowd, but Elon hopes to reverse their fortunes this winter.
The team will have a couple weeks off before facing rival UNC for a rare Wednesday night game. Two days later, Elon will head north to Washington D.C. for a pair of games against league foes Georgetown and George Washington University. The weekend trip will be a great opportunity to play games in front of friends and family, as many of our players are from the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, before heading home for Thanksgiving break.
In the first game of 2019, Elon will match up against UNC. This will mark the second of three games between the two rivals during the season. Games between the Phoenix and Tar Heels have become closely-contested and heated affairs in recent years, as both teams battle for valuable points in league standings. The following weekend, Elon will host the Mountaineers from West Virginia for a Friday night game. This game will be the first between the two programs, as WVU joined UNC-W as new members of the ACCHL for the 2018-2019 season.
To close out the regular season, Elon will host UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte and Wake Forest, and will travel to Winston-Salem to take on the Deamon Deacons, 2017-2018 league runner-up, for the final game before playoffs.
ACCHL playoffs will take place during the weekend of February 15th at the Winston-Salem Annex Fairgrounds, home of Wake Forest Hockey. Elon Hockey looks to get back to the playoffs and capture the program’s first-ever ACCHL championship.
